More than 200 coastal artillery shells were fired continuously on South Korea on Friday morning. South Korea’s army said that North Korea had shelled them. Residents of two South Korean islands were ordered to evacuate due to an unknown situation.
South Korea said in its statement that there were no reports of any damage from South Korea due to the firing. The shells fell north of the Northern Limit Line (NLL), the maritime border between the two Koreas.

Residents of two South Korean islands were ordered to evacuate due to an unknown situation. A text message sent to residents and confirmed by an island official cited naval gunfire by South Korean troops beginning at 3 p.m. (0600 GMT) on Friday.
An official on Yeonpyeong Island, which lies just south of the disputed Northern Limit Line (NLL) maritime border, said the evacuation was ordered at the request of the South Korean military. According to reports, South Korea says that North Korea has conducted artillery exercises on their disputed maritime border.
North Korea Attacked In 2010
In 2010, North Korean artillery fired several rounds on Yeonpyeong Island, killing four people, including two civilians, in one of the heaviest attacks on its neighbour since the Korean War ended in 1953. North Korea said at the time that it was provoked by the attack by South Korean live-fire exercises, which fired shells into its territorial waters.
