India’s New Flight In The Sky, Know The Features Of Dhruv NG Helicopter

Following the helicopter crash in Baramati, questions are once again being raised about the safety of VIP flights. Amidst this, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has showcased the safety features of its new Dhruv New Generation (Dhruv NG) helicopter. Displayed at Begumpet Airport, the Dhruv NG is being touted by HAL as a helicopter specifically designed for VIP flights and sensitive missions.

The Dhruv NG helicopter is a new and improved version of the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), specifically designed for the civil aviation market. It is based on the previous Dhruv platform but is designed with modern technology, improved flight capabilities, and enhanced safety features.

Special emphasis on safety in the new version

HAL Chairman and Managing Director D.K. Sunil stated in a press conference that the greatest emphasis has been placed on safety in this new version. According to HAL, the Dhruv NG features improved avionics and modern communication and navigation systems, providing pilots with clearer information during flight and reducing the risk of errors. The cockpit has also been designed to reduce pilot stress.

Dhruv NG is smoother and more reliable.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited stated that the new Dhruv NG offers a smoother and more reliable flight experience. Punctuality and safety are paramount in VIP missions, and the Dhruv NG meets all these requirements, including those for the Char Dham pilgrimage. HAL also stated that it aims to manufacture 10 Dhruv NG helicopters in the next year.

Currently, more than 330 versions of the Dhruv helicopter are flying with the armed forces and civil agencies across the country, giving HAL complete confidence in its new model. HAL is now preparing to sell the Dhruv NG internationally and is in talks with a Southeast Asian country.

In fact, HAL now aims to shift a significant portion of its business to civil aviation. The company aims to generate approximately 25% of its revenue from the civil aviation business in the next 10 years, with the Dhruv NG playing a crucial role. The Dhruv NG helicopter is now ready for use in civil, corporate, government, and emergency services, and it has the potential to transform India’s helicopter market and export prospects.

Features of the Dhruv NG Helicopter

This helicopter is equipped with two ‘Shakti 1H1C’ engines, which are indigenously developed and have received DGCA civil certification.
The helicopter features a glass cockpit, crashworthy seats, self-sealing fuel tanks, and advanced vibration control.

The Dhruv NG helicopter can be used for a variety of purposes:

  • VIP/VVIP Transport
  • Air Ambulance/Medical Emergency
  • Search and Rescue
  • Offshore Operations
  • Heli-tourism
  • Law Enforcement Agencies’ Requirements

Successful First Civil Flight

The first civil flight of the Dhruv NG successfully took place in Bengaluru in December. This is considered a major milestone for India in the civil helicopter sector. The flight was flagged off by the Union Minister of Civil Aviation, marking a significant step towards indigenous aviation capabilities and the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

This helicopter will reduce dependence on imports and provide a cost-effective alternative to foreign helicopters. It is suitable for operations across diverse Indian terrains, including mountains, deserts, and coastal areas. Plans are also underway to export it to the international market.

Approximately 65% of the Dhruv NG is manufactured in India, with a target to increase this to 80% Indian content over the next 10 years. During Wings India 2026, HAL signed an agreement to supply 10 Dhruv NG helicopters to Pawan Hans Ltd., with delivery scheduled for 2026-27. In addition, the BSF and some state governments have also expressed interest in these helicopters.
