CBSE New Notice for Class 10: Students Cannot Skip First Exam for Second Attempt

CBSE Board Exam 2026: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) 10th and 12th board exams begin on February 17th. Meanwhile, the Board has issued a new notification regarding the two-examination system for class 10th. In this notification, the Board has clarified that all students must appear for the first exam.

What happened?

According to the CBSE, some students requested permission to sit directly for the second exam because they were unable to sit for the first exam for some reason. However, the Board has rejected this request.

What are the new rules?

Under the new rules, every student must sit for the first exam. If a student fails to appear for three or more subjects in the first exam, they will not be allowed to appear for the second exam.

The second exam will be a supplementary exam.

The Board has also clarified that the second exam will be a supplementary or improvement exam. This means that students who pass the first exam will be able to sit for the second exam to improve their scores in up to three subjects from Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and Languages.

What if the first exam is missed?

If a student does not appear for the first exam, they will be placed in the ‘Essential Repeat’ category. Such students will have to reappear for the main exam in February next year. Students who receive a compartment result in the first exam will be eligible to appear for the second exam under the compartment category. The Board has also clarified that no additional subject can be taken separately after passing the 10th standard.

This decision by CBSE makes it clear that even in the two-exam system, the first attempt will be mandatory for all students, and the second attempt will be for improvement or compartment purposes only.
