China is building solar and hydropower projects at new bases built along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the eastern Ladakh sector. Senior government officials have given this information. Officials have told India Today that these projects have been taken up to meet the energy needs at the new base to house the troops stationed in the region.
According to senior government officials, the Chinese felt the need to set up power plants along the LAC because of the difficulties faced by China in deploying a large number of troops to guard the forward posts during inclement weather. Falling Chinese forces stationed in the Ladakh region have had to bear the brunt of inclement weather for a long time.
The official pointed out that compared to China’s preparedness, Indian troops have extensive experience operating in extreme winters at the height of the Siachen Glacier, as Indian troops have better capabilities and mean to withstand harsh weather conditions.
As per reports, China has deployed more than 50,000 troops along its borders with India since 2020. In 2020, China tried to change the status quo on the LAC in the Galwan Valley of eastern Ladakh. However, the Chinese aggression was successfully stopped by the Indian Army personnel stationed in the area. India and China have maintained heavy deployment of troops in the eastern Ladakh sector close to the LAC since the Galwan clash in 2020.
