India’s newest airline, Shankh Air, has received approval from the Ministry of Civil Aviation to operate flights in the country. The airline will focus on Uttar Pradesh, with hubs in Lucknow and Noida. However, starting flights will require approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Shankh Air will be Uttar Pradesh’s first scheduled airline. According to the company’s website, the airline aims to connect major cities across India via interstate and intrastate routes, focusing on areas with high demand and limited direct flight options.
Permission Granted For Three Years
The approval letter issued by the Aviation Ministry states that the company (Shankh Air) has been directed to comply with the relevant provision rules of FDI, SEBL, etc., as well as other applicable rules and regulations in this regard. It further states that the company has been permitted to operate flights for three years.
The launch of Shankh Airlines can improve connectivity in areas with limited air travel options and ease local connectivity across India.
Indigo, Air India Dominate The Indian Airline Sector
At present, Indigo and Air India dominate the Indian airline sector. Indigo has a share of more than 60 percent of the country’s total airline market and is the country’s largest airline company. Despite having a 63 percent presence in the Indian airline market, Indigo is focusing on further expansion.
The second largest airline, Air India, is also expanding rapidly. Air India plans to include Vistara by next year, which is currently co-owned by Tata Group and Singapore Airlines. However, it is stuck due to pending antitrust clearance. Air India is also acquiring AirAsia India and merging it with its low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express, which will increase its fleet and market presence.
