This time, four matches of the T20 World Cup have washed away due to rain. Several matches have resulted in the Duckworth-Lewis rule. Rain is also forecast for the semi-finals. Who will go to the final if the two semi-finals are washed out due to rain? And if the final collapses, then which team will win the World Cup? What are the rules of the ICC?
Pakistan will face New Zealand in Sydney next Wednesday. The next day, i.e. Thursday, India will play against England. Rain is forecast for both days. ICC has made a separate arrangement if the game is abandoned due to rain.
One extra or reserve day is kept for the semi-finals and finals. That is, if the game between New Zealand and Pakistan is not played on Wednesday, then the game will be played on Thursday. And if India and England’s match is not played on Thursday, then that match will be played on Friday.
What do the ICC rules say?
But the two-day game could be washed away due to rain. What will happen in that case? According to ICC rules, two teams must play at least 10 overs to get the result of the match. In normal T20 matches, both teams had to play at least 5 overs for a result. But at least 10 overs must be played in the semi-finals and finals of the World Cup.
If the game is stopped after some play on the first day, the second day will not start again, but play will be resumed from where it was stopped. But if two teams do not play after 10 overs, it will be seen which team has more points after the group stage. That team will be declared the winner.
India has the most points among the teams that reached the last four of the World Cup. Rohit Sharma’s point 8. After that, New Zealand and England point 7. Pakistan has the least points. Babar Azmara reached the semi-final with 6 points.
New Zealand will advance to the final with more points if the first semi-final is lost. Pakistan will be knocked out. On the other hand, if the second semi-final collapses, India will go to the final. England will be knocked out.
There is an extra day for the finals as well. But the final will be lost if at least 10 overs cannot be played on both days. In that case, the two finalist teams will be declared joint winners. That is, India and New Zealand will jointly win the World Cup.
