Elon Musk’s electric car company, Tesla, will enter the Indian market next year, i.e. in 2024. According to media reports, the ongoing negotiations to set up the company’s first manufacturing unit in India have reached their final stage. It is likely to end soon. According to the Ahmedabad Mirror report, an announcement regarding the Tesla manufacturing unit in the state can be made at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit, which will be held in January 2024.
Gujarat has been a strategic location for the business environment for many years. The state is already home to vehicle automakers like Maruti Suzuki manufacturing units. According to the report of Ahmedabad Mirror, the possible location of the Tesla manufacturing unit could be Sanand, Becharaji and Dholera.
The Gujarat government is optimistic about Tesla’s investment prospects in Gujarat ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January 2024. Gujarat Health Minister and government spokesperson Rushikesh Patel highlighted the alignment between Tesla’s goals and the state’s aspirations. Minister Patel expressed great hope, emphasizing the government’s welcoming attitude. He said that Tesla CEO Elon Musk will consider investing in Gujarat.
According to reports published by Gujarat Samachar and other media outlets in the state, Tesla’s manufacturing plant is likely to be located in Sanand. This is the same place where car manufacturers like Tata Motors are present. Indian car manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki and MG Motor also have plants in Gujarat.
Tesla is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit if reports are to be believed. The EV maker had earlier said it was keen to set up a battery manufacturing plant in India apart from electric cars. The carmaker has also indicated that it may finalize the location for its manufacturing plant in India by the end of this year. Many other states, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, are also trying to invite Tesla for investment.
According to reports, Tesla is eyeing not only land in Gujarat but also access to ports to export its electric vehicles to other countries. The proximity of Kandla-Mundra port in Gujarat to places like Sanand could help EV manufacturers. However, Sanand has not yet been finalized for Tesla’s upcoming India manufacturing plant. Tesla can bring Model 3, Model S, Model Y and Model X into the Indian market.
