Sometimes, even a small idea can lead to a big business. Indian designer Rahul Agarwal provides an example. He designed an everyday spoon that can be bent into different shapes. His idea won the hearts of investors on the American business reality show Shark Tank USA. He received an investment of $350,000, or approximately Rs 3.32 crore, on the show.
Rahul Agarwal is the founder of Polygons Design. His folding measuring spoons have received more than 20 international design awards.
What makes this spoon special?
Instead of using six traditional measuring spoons, Rahul has created two spoons that can be bent into different shapes. This saves space in the kitchen and eliminates the need for multiple spoons.
This set includes one large and one small spoon. The large spoon measures from half a tablespoon, one tablespoon, and two tablespoons. Meanwhile, the small spoon can measure a quarter teaspoon, half teaspoon, and even a teaspoon.
When flattened, the spoon is only 2.8 millimetres thick. It’s made using food-grade thermoplastic, water-repellent food-grade silicone, and small neodymium magnets. Applying pressure to the markings on the spoon bends it into the desired shape.

The idea came in college.
Rahul Agarwal came up with the idea to redesign this spoon in 2014. At the time, he was studying at the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad. A senior told him that the spoon design had already been perfected and there was no room for improvement. Rahul took this as a challenge.
He said, “I don’t even cook. But I couldn’t give up on the idea.” In just three days, Rahul developed the initial idea of bending a flat sheet of metal into different sizes. However, it took several years and numerous design changes to perfect it for use. Ultimately, this design made it to Shark Tank USA.

Who invested the money?
Rahul Agarwal’s company, Polygons Design, appeared on the fourth episode of Season 18 of the American show Shark Tank. Actress and producer Mindy Kaling also appeared as a guest investor.
On the show, Mindy Kaling and investor Lori Grenier expressed interest in Rahul’s idea. They jointly offered to invest $350,000 in his company. In return, they agreed to give him an 8% stake and a 2% advisory share, for a total of 10% going to the investors.
Mindy Kaling described the product as a brilliant and useful idea. Based on this deal, Rahul’s company, Polygons Design, was valued at approximately $3.5 million, or approximately Rs 33 crore.
