Due To Dry Air In Mumbai, Mercury Reached 37 Degrees Celsius

Mumbai’s temperature soared again on Saturday, with the Santacruz Observatory recording a maximum of 37 degrees from 35.8 degrees the previous day. The maximum temperature on Saturday was 3.7 degrees above normal. IMD officials attributed the rise in temperatures to clear skies, making way for direct sunlight and dry winds, resulting in reduced humidity and freezing temperatures in Mumbai and its surrounding districts. The day’s temperature at IMD’s Colaba observatory was recorded at 33.3 degrees, which was 0.6 degrees above normal, while it was 32.5 degrees a day earlier.

Minimum temperatures were recorded at IMD’s Colaba and Santa Cruz observatories at 25.7 and 23.9 degrees, respectively. Independent meteorologist Athreya Shetty said that on Saturday, winds were mainly north-northeast due to a ridge extending from the seasonal anticyclone over the Arabian Sea. “This delayed the arrival of the sea breeze due to the heat rising since last week in interior areas like Thane and Navi Mumbai entering Mumbai today,” Shetty said.

The record for April was 42.2 degrees Celsius, set in 1952. “Also, in the last 10 years, the highest maximum temperature was 39 degrees Celsius in 2014,” Shetty said. IMD has withdrawn its forecast for light rain in Thane and Palghar. It said that dry weather conditions will persist for a few days.
