Mumbai Metro: Mumbai’s public transport network is set to receive a major expansion. The Prime Minister will inaugurate the first phase of Line 2B (Andheri-Mandalay) and Line 9 (Dahisar-Kashigaon) of the Mumbai Metro between February 17 and 19. The launch of these two projects will provide fast, smooth, and comfortable travel options to millions of commuters in the eastern and western suburbs.
The inauguration of these two Mumbai Metro routes has been long-awaited. The code of conduct was in place due to the BMC elections, which prevented inauguration activities. These two routes will provide commuters with convenient transportation options within the city and to the suburbs.
Metro Line 2B: Travel from Andheri to Mandale in 40 minutes
Metro Line 2B is an approximately 23.6-kilometre-long elevated corridor that will run from Andheri (DN Nagar) to Mandale (near Mankhurd) via the eastern suburbs. Approximately 20 stations are proposed along this route, including major interchanges at Andheri, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Chembur, and Mankhurd. The first phase will begin operations between some key stations, strengthening connectivity to BKC and the eastern suburbs. Upon completion, the travel time between Andheri and Mankhurd is expected to be reduced from 90 minutes to approximately 40-45 minutes.
Mumbai Metro 9: Dahisar to Kashigaon journey in 30 minutes
Metro Line 9 is an extension of Line 7 and will run approximately 13.5 kilometres from Dahisar East to Kashigaon in the Mira-Bhayander area. This corridor will have approximately 8 stations. The first phase is expected to begin operations between Dahisar and Kashimira/Kashigaon, making travel easier for commuters to and from Mira-Bhayander from the western suburbs. Currently, it takes 60-75 minutes to travel this distance by road during peak hours; this could be reduced to 25-30 minutes once the metro is installed. M
Mumbai Metro: Heavy Traffic Pressure Will Be Reduced
The opening of these two lines is expected to ease traffic congestion on the Western Express Highway, Link Road, LBS Marg, and Eastern Freeway. It is estimated that millions of daily commuters will receive relief, and carbon emissions will also be reduced. This expansion of the Mumbai Metro will revitalise the city, and the eastern suburbs will benefit from direct metro connectivity for the first time.
