The Central Government has conducted a surgical strike on online betting apps; the government has banned 22 apps, including the Mahadev App, after which online betting will not be possible through these apps in India. First, the crores of rupees wedding of the owner of this app in Dubai and later the ED action against the people running it in Chhattisgarh. In such a situation, the government has banned 22 similar apps in the country, including Mahadev App.
What Is The Reason For The Dispute?
ED has been investigating the Mahadev Online Book App in Chhattisgarh for a long time. In such a situation, Union Minister of State Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that if the Chhattisgarh government wanted, it could have banned these apps itself because the Chhattisgarh government has the power to close the website/app under Section 69A of the IT Act.
Still, on their side, This has not been done since. Also, there was no demand to ban these apps, whereas investigation against these apps has been going on for the last 1.5 years. Due to this, controversy has started regarding the Mahadev app ban.
What Is Mahadev App?
This is an online betting app that Saurabh Chandrashekhar and Ravi Uppal from Chhattisgarh launched. The central agency found in the investigation that the Mahadev App offers betting for many live games like poker, cricket and badminton, tennis, and football. This app was launched in the year 2017. The app gained a lot of popularity during the Covid pandemic.
In September this year, ED seized assets worth Rs 417 crore related to Mahadev’s online betting app. The investigating agency had then alleged that the company of Saurabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal was being run from Dubai and Rs 450 crore was being earned every month from online gambling.
