Helicopter Carrying Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi Crashes, Rescue Team Sent To The Spot

The helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi met with an accident on Sunday. The country’s Finance Minister was also in the helicopter along with Raisi. The rescue team has been sent to the spot.

According to Iranian media, the helicopter carrying the president crashed in East Azerbaijan. Iranian state TV said on Sunday that a helicopter carrying a convoy of three people, in which Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was travelling, had crashed.

The Rescue Team Is Facing Problems

According to Iranian news agency IRNA, rescue teams have not yet been able to determine the location of the crash due to bad weather conditions. Raisi met his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev this morning and inaugurated the Qiz Qalasi Dam, which the two sides jointly constructed.

Where Did The Accident Happen?

Ibrahim Raisi was travelling in the East Azerbaijan province of Iran. State TV said the incident occurred near Jolfa, a city on the border with Azerbaijan, about 600 kilometres northwest of Tehran, the country’s capital.

Who Is Ibrahim Raisi?

Raisi, 63, is a hardliner who previously headed the country’s judiciary. He is seen as a disciple of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It is believed that he can replace 85-year-old Khamenei.

Raisi had won Iran’s 2021 presidential election. We sanctioned Raisi for his involvement in the mass executions of thousands of political prisoners at the end of the Iran–Iraq War in 1988.
