During his upcoming US visit, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will likely urge US President Joe Biden to endorse British Defense Minister Ben Wallace’s candidature for the NATO Secretary General post. The Telegraph gave this information in its report on Monday.
The report said Sunak had already raised the issue of Wallace’s appointment as the alliance’s secretary-general at a recent meeting of G7 leaders in Hiroshima, Japan. The report said Wallace is famous in the US government because of his central role in building an international coalition to support Ukraine and increasing the country’s defence spending to 2.25 per cent of GDP.
Notably, according to the report, Wallace’s candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General will not be supported by France and Germany. In addition, several NATO member states may support the candidacy of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The current NATO Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, was to resign on October 1, 2022. Still, in March of the same year, the leaders of NATO member states decided to extend his mandate until September 30, 2023.
