Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been ruled out of Asian Games 2023. Vinesh has decided to withdraw from the Asian Games due to injury. The 28-year-old wrestler gave this information through a post on social media on Tuesday. She said that on August 13, there was a knee injury for which surgery would have to be done. Vinesh wrote in the post I want to share very bad news. On August 13, I injured my left knee two days ago during training. After the scan and examination, the doctor said that, unfortunately, surgery is the only option now to recover from the injury. I will have an operation in Mumbai on August 17. It was my dream to win again the gold medal that I won for India in Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018, but unfortunately, due to this injury, I will not be able to participate in these games anymore. I have informed the concerned authorities that reserve players can be sent for the Asian Games.

Vinesh is the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold in the Asian Games. She defeated Japan’s Yuki Irie 6-2 in the women’s freestyle 50 kg category final at the 18th Asian Games. She also won gold in the 50 kg category at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018.
Significantly, Vinesh and Bajrang Punia were exempted from trials for the Hangzhou Asian Games, which created a lot of uproar. Junior wrestlers Avinash Panghal and Sujeet Kalkal approached the Delhi High Court seeking a stay on the exemption, but their plea was rejected.
