Tibet Critical Minerals: Two major Chinese mining companies are preparing to collaborate on a mining operation. They have chosen Tibet, a region with vast reserves of gold, copper, and other essential minerals. According to a report in the South China Morning Post, China is seeking to strengthen its domestic supply of strategic raw materials and is therefore leveraging the resources of the Tibet region.

According to regional authorities, at least nine strategic minerals found in Tibet rank among the top three in China in terms of known resource quantities. The region ranks first in China in terms of identified resources of copper, chromium, antimony, salt-lake lithium, and boron. In a statement, Zhihui Mining said the partners will focus on strategic mineral deposits, including molybdenum, gold, tungsten, and zinc.

Privately operated Shizhang Zhihui Mining and state-owned Zhaojin Nonferrous Mining signed an agreement on Thursday. This agreement will involve joint investment in mining projects in Tibet.

The company stated that this joint venture will not be limited to Tibet. Once successful, the model will be replicated in projects in mainland China. China has been expanding mineral exploration through agreements between state-owned and private mining companies since 2021.
