The central government implemented many new rules on Saturday, June 1. The new rules simplify obtaining a driving license (DL). The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) recently announced changes to simplify the process and reduce red tape while promoting better-trained drivers.
Relief From Long Lines
One of the biggest changes that will be implemented is that drivers will no longer need to queue up at the nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO) to take a driving test. These offices operate under the respective state governments.
Changes In Driving Test
Under the new driving license rules, people can take driving tests at private training centres instead of RTOs. However, to issue a driver’s license, these training centres will have to get approval from the government to conduct the test.
After completing the driving test, these centres will issue certificates to successful applicants. These certificates can be used to apply for a driving license through government RTOs.
Fees Also Amended
The Center has also amended the fees for obtaining and driving a driving record from 1. Rs 200 will have to be paid for obtaining a permanent driving license, learning license, or renewing both. The fee for obtaining an international driving license will be Rs 1,000 per application. For convenience, obtaining these licenses will now be entirely digital.
Penalty Amount Increased
The Center has also approved amendments to the fines imposed for driving without a valid license. Starting June 1, drivers violating this traffic rule will have to pay a fine of 2,000.
If a minor is caught driving a vehicle, the fine will be even higher. Under the new rules, a fine of Rs 25,000 will be imposed, and legal action will also be taken against the parents and vehicle owners. In such cases, the vehicle’s registration certificate can also be cancelled.
