Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh’s film ‘Dhurandhar’ has set several box-office records. Although the film has also been released on OTT platforms, it continues to perform exceptionally well in theatres. ‘Dhurandhar’ collection has crossed 1300 crore rupees.
Amidst the tremendous success of ‘Dhurandhar’, Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan has candidly shared his views on the fundamental problems facing the film industry. In a recent interview with Variety India, Aamir expressed his concern about the lack of cinema halls in India.
Using ‘Dhurandhar’ as an example, Aamir Khan explained how the lack of infrastructure is limiting film earnings. He said that if a film like Dhurandhar received the same wide release as Chinese films receive, it would earn even more.
Comparing India’s situation to China, Aamir said, “India is a vast country, almost like a continent. Every state here has its own language and culture. We need many more cinema halls. If we compare ourselves to China, they have approximately 100,000 screens, while we have only 9,000. We are only at one-tenth of their capacity. That’s why a film in China can gross $2 billion from its domestic market alone.”
Aamir said, “Dhurandhar has done business of approximately 1,000 crore rupees. Now imagine, if this film were released on 15,000 screens instead of 5,000, how massive the results would be. The real change will come when the number of screens increases, because even today, many districts in India do not have a single cinema hall.”
He added, “Cinema in India needs expansion at the grassroots level. When the number of screens increases, the base of our pyramid will widen. Films in China earn billions of dollars because the reach is much greater there.” It is worth noting that after the success of ‘Dhurandhar’, Aditya Dhar is preparing for the release of ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’. This film is scheduled to release on March 19, 2026. The film will once again feature a stellar cast, including Ranveer Singh, along with Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, and Akshaye Khanna.
