Veg Thali Inflation Update: Vegetarians were hit by inflation in July. Vegetarian food thali became 11 percent more expensive in July than in June, and the increase in tomato prices contributed greatly. In July, non-veg thali also became expensive by about 6 percent compared to June.
Veg Thali Expensive Due To Expensive Tomatoes
Crisil Market Intelligence and Analysis said in its Roti Rice Rate Index report for July 2024 that the average price of veg thali increased by 11 percent to Rs 32.6 per plate in July from Rs 29.4 per plate in June.
Apart from onion, tomato and potato in vegetables, rice, dal, curd and salad are included in veg thali. Veg thali has become expensive due to the rise in tomato prices. Tomato prices alone have contributed 7% to the rising prices of veg thali, which has seen a 55% jump in July compared to June and has gone up from Rs 42 per kg to Rs 66 per kg. Onion prices have increased by 20% and potato prices by 10%.
Non-veg Thali Also Expensive
According to the Crisil report, non-veg thali became expensive in July. The price of non-veg thali has jumped by 6% to Rs 61.4, which was Rs 58 in June 2024. Chicken is included in non-veg thali instead of lentils.
According to Crisil, veg thali became cheaper in July 2024 than in July 2023. Last year, in July, there was a huge increase in the prices of tomatoes, so due to the prices having come down to the base effect, in July 2023, the cost of tomatoes had reached Rs 110 per kg. Non-veg thali has also become 9 percent cheaper in July 2024 compared to July 2023. Due to an 11 percent drop in the price of chicken, the non-veg thali has become cheaper in July than last year.
