Getting Married? Don’t Forget to Register; Here’s Why a Marriage Certificate Matters

In any society, marriage is a new relationship between two people and two families. With Agni as the witness, two people get married in the presence of family and relatives.

Did you know that you must register your marriage? If you do not, big problems can arise. Marriage registration is done under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955 and the Special Marriage Act 1954.

Why Is It Necessary To Obtain A Marriage Certificate?

If you are working somewhere and are choosing a married option in marital status, then your marriage certificate becomes the proof of marriage. This is necessary for both government and non-government institutions. If you want to benefit from any scheme brought by the Central or State Government for husband and wife, you must have a marriage certificate.

After their husbands’ deaths, widowed women also benefit from government schemes based on marriage certificates. The marriage certificate also becomes the basis for filing an FIR against the spouse related to domestic matters. To apply for divorce, you must have proof of marriage, i.e., a marriage certificate.

If you want to become a permanent citizen of another country, then it is also necessary for the couple to show their marriage certificate. If you want to open a joint account in the bank, then a marriage certificate can be used as the basis.

When Can Marriage Be Registered?

If you are newly married, you should apply for a marriage certificate within 30 days. However, if there is some delay, the marriage can be registered even after five years with additional fees.

Let us tell you, if it is more than five years, only the concerned District Registrar can give an exemption.

How To Apply For Marriage Certificate

For a marriage certificate, one has to apply to the marriage registrar. After getting the appointment, you must go to the Registrar on the appointed day with all the necessary documents.

You can visit your state government website online. The marriage registration option is available here. When making an appointment, you can come to the office on the appointed day with two witnesses and documents.

Documents Required For Marriage Certificate

  • Application Form
  • Proof of address
  • Age certificate of the couple (birth or 10th certificate)
  • ID card of the couple
  • Aadhaar card
  • Two passport-size photographs of marriage, a joint photo, and a marriage card.

If the marriage takes place in the temple, then a certificate is obtained from Gurudwara, the Church, and two witnesses; if the marriage takes place for the second time, then the divorce certificate of the first marriage, death certificate on the death of the first husband, court documents on court marriage.

Age Of Couple To Register Marriage

Let us tell you, to obtain a marriage certificate, the woman must be at least 18 years of age on the date of marriage. Apart from this, the age of the man should be 21 years.
