New COVID Variant EG.5.1 Spreading Rapidly in Britain; WHO Starts Monitoring It

The EG.5.1 variant derives from the Omicron COVID variant. UKHSA says that most cases of the new variant have been seen in Asia. EG.5.1 was registered as a new variant in the UK on July 31.

Cases Increased Due To New Variants In Britain

According to a Sky News report, in the week starting July 10, each of the first 9 cases was linked to the EG.5.1 variant. New data shows it accounts for 14.6% of the UK’s new Covid cases. It has become the second most dangerous variant spreading rapidly in Britain. The new variant is spreading rapidly, and because of this, Covid cases are increasing.

Officials Are Monitoring The Situation

British officials have said that they are keeping a close eye on the situation. Dr Mary Ramsay, head of immunization at the UKHSA, said: ‘We have seen an increase in hospital admissions across all ages, particularly the elderly. He said, ‘At present, the admission rate in the hospital is very low and not many people are admitted to the ICU. We are closely monitoring the situation.

Keeping An Eye On The New Variant Of WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has started monitoring the EG.5.1 variant for the last two weeks. WHO director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that even though people are safe because of the vaccine, it does not mean that any country should be lax.
