According to a Reuters report, Boris Johnson resigned as a UK MP after receiving information about being punished for misleading Parliament. Due to his resignation, by-elections will likely be held for the vacant seat.
Let us tell you that Johnson was fighting for his political future amidst a parliamentary investigation. He was accused of misleading the House of Commons when he said all COVID-19 regulations had been followed.
The Privileges Committee of Parliament could recommend that Johnson be suspended from Parliament for more than 10 days if it was proved that he had either negligently or intentionally misled Parliament. But he resigned and potentially started the election for his seat.
The former prime minister said he had “received a letter from the Privileges Committee that they are determined to take action against me to get me out of Parliament”. He said, “Most members of the committee, especially the chairman, had made deeply prejudiced comments about my guilt even before they had seen the evidence.”
Significantly, Johnson, whose premiership was marred by anger within his party and across Britain for holding lockdown parties at his Downing Street office and residence breaking COVID rules, accused the committee of being an example of a kangaroo court.
