During the G20 conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly proposed reforms in UN bodies and increased the number of permanent members in the UNSC. India is a strong contender for the sixth chair of the UNSC. Countries all over the world are in support of India. Turkey, which supported Pakistan, supported India for the UNSC this time. There is only one obstacle in this path, and that is China. Let us tell you that till now, there are five permanent members in UNSC, known as P5. These include America, Britain, Russia, France and China.
Why Is China Afraid Of India?
The United Nations Security Council is considered the most influential body of the UN. To pass any resolution in the UNSC, the consent of the permanent members is required. If even one country disagrees on any proposal, then it gets stuck. This is called veto power. If India gets permanent membership in the UNSC, then India will join the veto power countries.
In such a situation, China’s position in the UNSC may weaken. Till now, among the permanent members, Russia and China constitute the majority. Britain, America and France are seen together. With India’s arrival, China will be seen as becoming isolated.
Apart from this, India also has good relations with Russia. In such a situation, India’s hold in the UNSC will be considered the strongest. It is this status of India that China fears and creates hurdles in India’s permanent membership.
India Is A Strong Contender
During bilateral talks before the G20 summit, US President Joe Biden supported India’s UNSC membership. At the same time, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also said that he wants India to be a permanent member of the UNSC. However, this decision is not in his hands.
Let us tell you that in UNSC, China is the only country that comes under the developing country category. There has been discussion about reforming UNAC for many years. India formed G4 along with Germany, Brazil and Japan. All these countries are demanding permanent membership in the UNSC.
However, there are many countries which oppose them for their interests. Italy and Spain do not want Germany to join the UNSC permanently. Similarly, Pakistan and China do not want India to get veto power.
India is the largest country in the world in terms of population. Besides this, India is also looking strong on the global economic front. India is a nuclear-rich nation. Regarding space science, India is among the world’s top five countries. However, to include any country in the UNSC, the UN Charter must be amended, which India has talked about for a long time. However, China’s consent will also be necessary to amend the charter. The matter gets stuck here.
