Sri Lanka Bans Chinese Ships for a Year; Big New Year Move After India’s Warning

Sri Lanka gave a big blow to China on New Year, imposing a one-year ban on the entry of Chinese research ships into Sri Lankan ports. People associated with this matter said on Sunday (December 31) that Sri Lanka has informed India. They have said that for the next year, they will not allow Chinese research vessels to stop at their ports or operate within their Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Sri Lanka has decided to ban China after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged President Ranil Wickremesinghe to respect Indian strategic and security concerns during their meeting on July 21, 2023.

India and America Put Pressure

Earlier, Sri Lanka had permitted China’s scientific research ship Xiang Yang Hong 3 to stay in the South Indian Ocean from January 5, 2024, to the end of May, which will no longer be given after the ban. Last week, India and the US issued a warning to the Sri Lankan government to assist Chinese scientific research vessels and ballistic missile trackers in the Indian Ocean. After this, Sri Lanka imposed a one-year ban on Chinese research ships.
