However, a few hours later, Xi Jinping skipped a special dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His absence has become a topic of discussion.
According to sources, Xi Jinping arrived in Delhi on Saturday afternoon. He participated in the BRICS summit and subsequently held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi. However, he was not seen at the special dinner that evening. The official reason for Xi Jinping’s absence has not yet been released.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the Chinese President may have returned to his hotel to rest after the summit and meetings. However, no official explanation has yet been provided by China or India for his absence. Therefore, it would be premature to interpret his absence as a political or diplomatic signal.
Several prominent leaders were present at the dinner.
Several leaders from BRICS countries and senior Indian politicians attended the dinner hosted by Prime Minister Modi. Russian President Vladimir Putin was also present. From India’s side, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Ashwini Vaishnav, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan attended the dinner. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was also present.
In addition, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also attended the dinner.
Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince also did not attend.
Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed was also absent from the dinner. He had left for his country after attending the BRICS summit earlier in the day.
Xi Jinping has visited India for the first time in 7 years.
Xi Jinping has visited India after nearly seven years. His visit is considered very important for India-China relations. Relations between the two countries had escalated following the violent clash in the Galwan Valley in 2020.
In this context, the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Xi Jinping during the BRICS summit drew close attention. The talks between the two leaders came at a time when efforts are underway to normalise border issues, as well as trade and bilateral relations between India and China.

India is hosting the BRICS summit on September 12 and 13. Leaders from 11 BRICS member countries, along with representatives from 10 partner countries, are attending. Representatives from several international organisations are also participating.
At present, the reason for Xi Jinping’s absence from the dinner is unclear. His bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi and future developments will be closely monitored from the perspective of India-China relations.
