How is the price of LPG determined?

According to Indian Oil, any increase or decrease in LPG prices affects India’s fuel costs. International LPG rates are used as a benchmark for pricing, and OMCs adjust prices based on the previous month’s average benchmark and foreign exchange rates.

On the other hand, the price of domestic 14.2 kg LPG is not completely left to the market. The government can direct OMCs to maintain prices as needed. For example, in May 2026, IOCL stated that despite rising international fuel prices, the price of domestic LPG remained unchanged, protecting domestic consumers from the impact. This means that an increase in international LPG prices does not necessarily make domestic cylinders more expensive.

Subsidies also affect the final price.

The government can provide LPG subsidies directly to eligible consumers in their bank accounts. Currently, for PMUY consumers, the central government provides a targeted subsidy of up to ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder, with a maximum of 12 refills per year.
