During festivals like Diwali and Chhath, a large number of people travel home by train. Many passengers carry sweets, clothes, and other festive items. Some even consider carrying firecrackers. But did you know that carrying firecrackers on a train is illegal? Keeping passenger safety in mind, Indian Railways has prohibited the carrying of firecrackers and flammable materials on trains. Anyone caught doing so could face legal action.
Firecrackers are prohibited on trains.
According to Indian Railways rules, carrying firecrackers, bombs, and other explosives is not permitted on trains. The gunpowder and flammable materials in firecrackers can cause a fire or explosion. Trains often carry hundreds of passengers at a time, so a fire in a compartment could cause a major disaster. This is why the Railways have included such items in the list of prohibited items. Not only firecrackers, but also petrol, kerosene, gas cylinders, acid, and other flammable substances are prohibited on trains.
What could be the punishment if caught?
Under Section 164 of the Railway Act 1989, carrying dangerous goods illegally on a train is a punishable offence. If a passenger is caught carrying firecrackers or other dangerous substances, they can be punished with a maximum of 3 years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to ₹1,000, or both. Furthermore, if such goods cause damage to the railway or to any passenger, the person concerned may be liable for compensation.
Don’t Carry These Items on Trains
Under railway rules, in addition to firecrackers, gas cylinders, petrol, kerosene, acid, and other flammable materials are also prohibited. Even booking such items as luggage is prohibited without permission. Railway employees may also inspect any package if they suspect it to contain suspicious material.
Keep these things in mind before travelling.
If you’re travelling home by train for Diwali, don’t pack firecrackers or any flammable items in your bag. Finding such items during security checks at the station or on the train could result in action being taken. If you see any passenger carrying suspicious explosives or flammable items, you can report them to the railway helpline number 139. Following safety rules is crucial to celebrating the festival.
