The Commode Was Stolen After The Art Exhibition On September 14, 2019
The incident occurred on September 14, 2019, during an art exhibition at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, UK. One of the largest houses in England, the palace was built between 1705 and about 1722. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The palace is also notable as the birthplace and ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill. A gold toilet seat, created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, was stolen during an exhibition here yesterday. This toilet was installed in his art exhibition Victory is Not an Option.
Interestingly, this commode was also lent to former US President Donald Trump in 2016. That day, thieves entered the mansion of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in Oxfordshire and took away the commode. The value of this commode was 50 lakh pounds, i.e. more than Rs 50 crore. Thieves had uprooted it from the wooden floor, flooding the palace and causing extensive damage.
Two Accused Of Theft and Two Of Conspiracy To Transfer Property
Now, four people have been named in this case. The accused, Michael Jones (38) and James Sheen (39) of Oxford have been identified as the thieves. Apart from this, 35-year-old Fred Do of Ascot and 39-year-old Bora Gucuk of London are accused of conspiracy to transfer property. A police spokesman said: “Following an investigation by Thames Valley Police, four people have been charged with a burglary at Blenheim Palace. All of them have to appear before the Oxford Magistrate on November 28.
