This was announced during the Indian Republic Day celebrations organized by the Indian Embassy in Paris. It was launched at the Eiffel Tower on Friday. Indians visiting France can easily buy tickets online using UPI to see the Eiffel Tower.

After this announcement, Indian tourists can quickly make payments by scanning QR codes through UPI-supported apps. Not only the Eiffel Tower but will also prove helpful in many services like booking hotels, visiting museums, etc.

The acceptance of UPI in France has also opened up new opportunities for those working in France and Europe’s tourism and retail sectors. India’s Ambassador to France and Monaco, M Jawed Ashraf, and representatives of Lyra attended the event.

In 2022, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which provides UPI services, agreed with France’s online payment system, Lyra.

NPCI introduced the UPI system in the country in 2016. PhonePe was one of the first platforms to implement it. After one year, it was connected to almost every payment system. It has become so popular that even foreign countries try adopting it.

With over 380 million users, UPI has established itself as a leading payment method in India. In January 2024, UPI recorded more than 12.2 billion transactions.

What Is UPI?

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is India’s mobile-based fast payment system. It allows users to transfer money from their mobile platforms to another bank account.

UPI is a concept that allows money transfers between multiple bank accounts through one mobile application. The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) developed it.

UPI Is Applicable In So Many Countries

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is implemented in at least 12 countries, including Singapore, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, the US, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and France.

Bhutan was the first foreign country to adopt India’s UPI and, in July 2021, the first country to allow UPI transactions through the BHIM app.
